The Vijayawada police filed cases against 447 gamblers who placed bets on cockfights on the eve of Pongal within the police commissionerate limits and seized Rs 4 lakhs in cash from them, the police said.
In a press release issued here today, Police Commissioner B Srinivasulu said that intensified patrolling, raids and other preventive measures had minimised illegal activities on festival days.
Some anti-social elements with previous records of organising cock fights and accepting gambling bets were detained in advance, he said.
