A policeman was attacked at Nalla Sopara in the district last night, Thane district rural police said today.
Inspector Sanjay Nikam of Nalla Sopara police station said that a patrolling team of police spotted four suspicious-looking men in Oswal Nagari area last night.
When police stopped and started questioning them, one of them pulled out a hammer and hit constable Shashi Patil (26) on the head.
The constable, severely injured and bleeding, was taken to Alliance Hospital in Nalla Sopara.
Police said that Sharad Chandara Sharma, one of the men, was also injured when policemen retaliated in "self defence".
Search is on for the other three. An attempt to murder case has been lodged against them.
