Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today said he did not want power but wants to empower people who are for development work.

Stating that there were two types of leaders, he said that one kind gave power to the people and the other wanted power from the people.

"...I am not like that. I don't want your power. I want all of you to get power. I want to empower Assam and India," he said, while addressing a public rally here.

"Give as much power as possible to the people for development work. I sit in Delhi, so I don't know about problems of village. The panchayat sits in the village and they know more about the village. I want to empower them."

Speaking about the middle class, he said that his party wants to uplift 70 crore people in above the BPL category to the middle-class.

"Currently, there are 70 crore people in above BPL category. They do all kinds of work. We want to bring them to the middle class," Gandhi said, adding in the last 10 years, 15 crore people were lifted out of poverty.

"It is simply historical."

Speaking about the BJP, Gandhi said the opposition party was claiming that whatever progress India achieved in 70 years, it would be done by them in three-four years.

"By this, they are making a joke on the people. Because, the progress has been done by you, not by me or Tarun Gogoi," he said.

Praising the Tarun Gogoi government, Gandhi said peace had come to the state in the last 13 years.
