A number of pro-Vidarbha supporters were today arrested for holding protests over separate Vidarbha outside Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' residence here today, police said.

The arrested activists, including former legislator Wamanrao Chatap, were later released in the evening, police said.

Addressing protesters before the arrest, Chatap alleged, "Fadnavis, during his term as a state BJP president (before he became Chief Minister), had toured Maharashtra and wherever he went in Vidarbha, he proclaimed that getting a separate Vidarbha was their main agenda."

"Now when his party is in power both in Delhi and Mumbai, why is it not happening? We have come to his house in Nagpur to ask him this," Chatap said.

Former head of department of economics and business management, Nagpur University, Dr Shrinivas Khandewale, noted lawyer Nanda Parate and former Director General of Police (Home Guards & Civil Defence) Prabir Kumar Chakraborty also took part in the protest.

The police resorted to mild cane charge to disperse the crowd, when they tried to enter the house of the Chief Minister. Nobody was injured.
