President Ram Nath Kovind today said the Railways remained the main mode of transport in the country which was why investment in the sector was continuously being enhanced.

In his maiden address to the joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament, Kovind said the country needed to modernise and develop the capacity of the national transporter.

"Railways remain the main mode of transport even today and that is why investment in railways for capacity development and modernisation is being enhanced continuously. My government is committed to the construction of world class Railways," he said.

The president also said work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train had already begun and the government had also formulated a new metro rail policy which put emphasis on "last mile connectivity".

"Metro work is in progress in 11 cities of the country," he said.
