Press Trust of India Hyderabad
Rural Electrification Corp (REC) today assured funding to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore for the projects of state-run power utilities in Telangana.

The move will help Telangana GENCO (Power Generation Corp), TRANSCO (Transmission Corp) and distribution companies.

The assurance was given by REC Chairman and Managing Director Rajeev Sharma when he called on Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at the Secretariat here, an official release said.

To a suggestion from Chief Minister, Sharma also agreed to fund all the GENCO projects, it said.

The CM discussed with Sharma and CMD of GENCO D Prabhakar Rao the power scenario in the State.

He told Prabhakar Rao that the present production capacity of less than 5,000 MW power needs to be increased through long, short and medium term strategies.

The GENCO CMD told the Chief Minister that Telangana will get 2,800 MW of additional power by the end of next year from three different state and central sources.

"When this is made available, the deficiency will be overcome and the extra power that is likely to be generated in future will become surplus," Prabhakar Rao was quoted as saying in the release.
