Registrar arrested on bribery charges

The registrar of a state-run university here has been arrested by Lokayukta police for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh for an official favour, police said today.

Katepaga Vijayakumar, Registrar of Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, had demanded a bribe of Rs 3.50 lakh to renew the recognition of a college, they said.

A member of the college management had lodged a complaint with Lokayukta police, following which a trap was laid to catch him, they said.

Vijayakumar was arrested while receiving the bribe at his residence in Ballari last night, police said. He has been remanded to judicial custody by a court.
