Police have cracked the case of a robbery at a residence in the Sunder Nagar area within 12 hours with the arrest of two persons allegedly involved in the crime and the recovery of booty of close to Rs 24 lakh.

Mohd Mohibul Islam (19) and Mohd Aslam alias Naseem (18) were arrested by South-East district police in connection with the robbery yesterday.

At about 11 P.M. Last night, a police team at Old Delhi railway station apprehended Islam as he was about to board the Brahamputra Mail bound for Dibrugarh in Assam.

A search of his bag yielded Rs 16 lakh in cash and gold ornaments looted from the Sunder Nagar residence. Ali Hussain, the third accomplice, who was accompanying Islam, however, managed to escape in the rush.

Later, following a lead obtained from Islam, Mohd Aslam was arrested from his hideout at Jahangirpuri. Booty of about Rs 8 lakh was recovered from Aslam along with jewellery.

"The incident took place yesterday when Kavita Advani (84) and her maid Sushma were at home. Islam had been recently hired by the family for cleaning the house and the cars. After the elderly woman's son, Kapil Advani, left the house at 9 A.M., Islam arrived for cleaning.

"He later let two accomplices, Mohd Aslam and Mohd Ali, into the house before carrying out the robbery," said a senior police official.

The trio held the women at knife point and ransacked the house. As the maid had tried to put up a resistance, they tied her up and gagged her. The robbers also thrashed the maid.

They looted approximately Rs 25 lakh from the house along with gold ornaments. They also took away the mobile phone of the maid, police added.

After being notified about the case, police launched searches at the New Delhi, Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar railway stations and at the bus terminuses at Anand Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan and Kasmiri Gate.
