A unidentified man fled with Rs 1.76 lakh in cash from inside a bank after he slit open the bag of a customer who was in the queue to deposit the money here in Burdwan district today, the police said.

Interestingly, the customer realised what happened and raised an alarm before the man went out of the bank but the security guard did not do anything and he himself disappeared sometime later.

Rajkumar Hati, a businessman, had gone to the State Bank of India branch at busy Khosbag locality to deposit the money and was busy filling up the deposit slip while standing in the queue.

The man next to Hati slit open his bag with a sharp weapon and was walking away when the businessman realised his money was gone.

He cried out to the security guard to close the gate but the guard did not do anything and the thief went out freely and melted in the crowd, the police said.

The guard too fled after a while.

While the bank authorities did not say anything, Hati lodged a complaint with the police.
