Armed miscreants looted Rs 6.5 lakh from a nationalised bank branch in West Bengal's Malda district today.

Police said a group of nine gun-wielding miscreants forcibly entered United Bank of India branch at Ratua on the Bengal-Bihar border this afternoon and snatched mobile phones from customers and bank staff.

They also assaulted the bank staff and looted Rs 6.5 lakh from the cash counter.

They then escaped in waiting motorbikes, the police said.

Local people gave them a hot chase and caught six of them just when the miscreants were about to enter Bihar.

Rs one lakh was recovered from the miscreants by the people, who handed over the money to the police.

The other miscreants, however, made good their escape with the rest of the looted money, police added.
