The infrastructural facilities around the Sri Mookambika temple at Kollur in Udupi district would be upgraded at a cost of Rs 70 crore, Udupi deputy commissioner R Vishal has said.

The district administration would first take steps to set up an elaborate drainage system to check the discharge of sewage by hotels and restaurants polluting river Sauparnika, he said at a press meet in Udupi.

The preliminary works to have an improved system in the temple area and Kollur village would be completed within three months, spending around Rs 5 Crore.

The remaining work for Rs 65 crore to develop infrastructure in the temple village, visited by thousands of devotees every year, would take two years for completion, Vishal said.

A sum of Rs 25 Crore would be required for the proposed integrated sewage treatment plant and underground drainage system covering the entire village.

The project had received clearance from the Endowment Commissioner and was pending before the cabinet for approval, he said.

A Rs 19.62 crore integrated water supply scheme for the temple and the village would be taken up as part of the project. The detailed project report on this had been submitted to the Urban Water Supply and Sewage Board.

The temple kitchen-cum-dining hall would be made more spacious. The new hall with 65,000 sq m length and width would be constructed at a cost of Rs 21 Crore.

A ring road would be developed around the temple village covering the 'bathing ghat' on the banks of Sauparnika river. A concrete road was also being planned from Shankaracharya park to the main road at the temple.

The project also envisages a highly structural parking area at the temple premises, he said.
