SC issues notice to Centre, states on wetland conservation

The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre and the states on a PIL seeking its direction to them to preserve wetland and to restrain construction on such land.

A bench headed by Justice H L Dattu sought response from Tamil Nadu government on a plea of the petitioner seeking CBI probe into multi-storeyed building collapse constructed allegedly on wetland in Chennai in which 42 people lost their lives.

The petition was filed by advocates R Krishna Murthy and N Rajaraman seeking preservation of wetland.

The petitioners also pleaded that a compensation of Rs 25 lakh be given to family members of those who died in the June 28 incident of collapse of the the 11-storeyed under construction residential building.
 

They also requested for a CBI probe into the incident and direction to Tamil Nadu government to identify all the illegal construction in the state.

On June 28, the 11-storeyed under construction residential building collapsed in Chennai.
