A 21-year-old engineering student's selfie stunt on a beam of the iconic Brooklyn bridge has landed him in jail after the photo went viral on social media raising security concerns before the July 4 holiday.

David Karnauch, a student at the University of Tennessee, who took a selfie of himself on a beam of the bridge was arrested for the stunt yesterday, authorities said.

Karnauch climbed onto a beam of the iconic bridge and snapped a selfie of himself just prior to the American Independence Day.

He posted the image to his Instagram and it quickly went viral - raising security concerns before the busy holiday weekend, The New York Post reported.

"You could just get on a beam and it actually had handrails on the left and right side, and I just walked across the bridge and turned around to take a picture," he had said after the image went viral.

Karnauch is due in court August 31. He will have to wait for his court date in a Chattanooga jail because he is being held without bond, police said.
