In record setting spree, the BSE benchmark Sensex today extended gains to trade at fresh intra-day high of 22,070.45 at mid-session on increased foreign funds inflow driven by firming Asian trend.

The Sensex, which had reached a record in the late morning trade, further spurted by gaining 315.13 points, or 1.44 per cent to 22,070.45 at 1330 hrs, a level never seen before.

Similarly, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty shot up by 96.60 points, or 1.48 per cent to 6,591.50, also a record level.

Brokers said the sentiment was bolstered as foreign funds remained net buyers after the government exceeded its asset sales target for this fiscal.

They said the buying activity was confined to stocks of banking, refinery and metal sectors on expectations of improving economic growth boosting their revenues.
