Residents of Nayagaon village in Shamli district boycotted the Panchayat elections held yesterday demanding the arrest of those involved in the murder of a trader here.

According to Circle Officer Nishant Sharma, district authorities tried to pursue the villagers to cast their vote but they refused.

"Only seven people out of the 980 voters cast their votes in Zila Panchayat polls," Sharma said.

The villagers were demanding that those responsible for murder of trader, Upendra Singh who was killed by unidentified persons on October 25, be arrested, he said.

The last leg of Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh was held yesterday and the results will be declared on November 1 and 2.
