"Game of Thrones" author George R R Martin has paid tribute to "Star Wars" actress Carrie Fisher and "Watership Down" writer Richard Adams, saying the world is poorer without them.

In a blog post titled "A Bad Year Gets Worse," Martin wrote, "Death, death, and more death... This year just keeps getting worse and worse."

"There is not much I can say about the death of Carrie Fisher that a thousand other people have not said already. She was way too young. A bright, beautiful, talented actress, and a strong, witty, outspoken woman. Princess Leia will live as long as STAR WARS does... Probably forever..."

Martin, who has earned widespread praise for creating the fantasy universe of seven kingdoms, compared Adams to JRR Tolkien.

"...The world lost one of its great fantasists today," he said, adding "Watership Down" was one of the great fantasy novels of the 20th century, alongside Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and TH White's "The Once and Future King."

Adams died in his sleep at age 96 on Christmas Eve, and Fisher died Tuesday at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack Friday.

"A wonderful actress, a great writer. The world is poorer tonight," Martin wrote.
