Tracking a firm global trend, silver prices rose Rs 280 at Rs 39,987 per kg in futures trade today as speculators engaged in raising bets.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver for delivery in March contracts spurted by Rs 280, or 0.71 per cent, to Rs 39,987 per kg in business turnover of 414 lots.

The white metal for delivery in May was trading higher by Rs 242, or 0.60 per cent, to Rs 40,465 per kg in three lots.

Analysts said participants raised bets amid a firm trend overseas as the weakness in the dollar boosted demand for the precious metals as a safe-haven.

In the international market, silver rose 0.29 per cent to USD 17.58 an ounce in Singapore today.
