Reacting sharply to the attempts of BJP and Congress to hold demonstrations in Kanth area of Moradabad district, ruling SP today accused the parties of "inciting riots" with an intention to "vitiate law and order" in Uttar Pradesh.

"The opposition parties are inciting riots to vitiate law and order situation and trying to distract attention of the people from the development works done by the SP government in the state," SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said in a statement issued here.

Lashing out at the parties, he said BJP's basic character was communal and Congress is taking its agenda forward in the name of peace march.

On the situation in Kanth, where the parties had planned demonstrations, but authorities stopped it by imposing prohibitory orders, Chaudhary said peace has returned.

He also said that BJP was "not feeling good" with this peace and normalcy and were continuously "trying to create disturbance so Kanth turns into Muzaffarnagar".

Asserting that violence and vandalism could not be justified in the name of protest, the party spokesman said, "Provocating actions for disputes which can be solved amicably is like taking law in hand."

Chaudhary said that in democracy opposition has a constructive role to play and added that SP government was committed to maintain rule of law and was able to prevent any riot.

Earlier in the day, leaders and workers of BJP and Congress were detained as they arrived to hold demonstrations after government had imposed prohibitory orders in Kanth.
