At least 40 Sri Lankan fishing vessels are believed to have been caught in a storm in the international waters near Myanmar, an official said today.

"Some 40 boats have got caught in the storm near Myanmar waters and are now stranded," Fisheries Ministry spokesman Narendra Rajapaksa said, adding that it's not clear how many people were sailing on these boats.

"We have also heard that at least three Sri Lankan fishing boats have been seized by Myanmar's navy in its maritime border," he said.

The spokesman added that the ministry was in touch with the Myanmar government and have sought urgent assistance from them to rescue the distressed fishermen.
