State govt official sentenced to 3-yr RI by CBI court

A state government official was today sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a CBI court after being found guilty of accepting Rs 5,000 bribe to release reimbursement amount to an NGO under the Babasaheb Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojna Scheme.

Assistant Director of the Handicrafts Department S Gurumurthy was sentenced to three years RI by CBI Special Judge Sendilkumar for accepting the bribe to release Rs 75,000 as reimbursement to a Salem-based NGO, an official release said.

He was also slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000.

Gurumurthy has demanded Rs 5,000 to process a report pertaining to reimbursement of a NGO which was selected under the scheme.
 

Acting on a complaint from the NGO, CBI laid a trap and caught the official while he was accepting the amount, the release said.
