AP Baghdad
Authorities in Iraq say a suicide bombing has killed at least five policemen during a search operation in a town north of Baghdad.

They say the bomber set off his explosives belt next to the policemen conducting the search in the town of Tarmiyah, a former insurgent stronghold about 50 kilometres north of Baghdad.

More than 16 policemen were also wounded in the attack.

Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualty figures for all attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.

At least 173 people have died in attacks across the country so far this month, according to an Associated Press count.
