Officials in Iraq say a suicide car bomb targeting an army checkpoint has killed four soldiers in embattled Anbar province.

Police officials say the bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into the checkpoint on a bridge today in the town of Rawah. They say three soldiers were wounded. The police officials say that the bridge on the Euphrates river was partially damaged.

Rawah is 275 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to journalists.

Fierce clashes pitting government security forces and allied Sunni tribal militias against a coalition of insurgents has been raging in Anbar province since late December.
