Advocate Sushiben Shah, daughter of former Congress minister B A Desai, was today appointed as chairperson of Maharashtra State Women Commission.

The appointment was made against the backdrop of the post lying vacant for quite some time and the Bombay High Court recently pulling up the government over growing crimes against women.

Besides Shah, the government has also appointed six other members in the commission, a source said.

According to the source, the decision to appoint Shah was taken in a meeting held yesterday between state unit Congress president Manikrao Thakre and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

When contacted, Shah told PTI she would strive to work towards ensuring safety, security and dignity of women.

"Women would get their rights and due respect after they approach the commission," she said.

She had in the past served as a member in the women's commission.
