Temple desecration: Religious places on accused's target

Several religious places were on target of Deshraj, who was arrested on charges of allegedly desecrating a temple here with the intention to trigger communal tension, police said today.

During interrogation, police recovered maps and lists of several religious places from his possession, SSP HN Singh said.

The places on Deshraj's target include Gorakhnath temple (Gorakhpur), Shakumbhri Devi temple (Saharanpur) and an Idgah in the district.

According to the police, Deshraj confessed that several places were on his target with the intention of creating communal disturbance.

The 30-year-old accused was arrested yesterday at Parasoli village in the district. Police recovered an idol and other goods of the temple from his possession.
 

Deshraj was booked under sections 295 (defiling a place of worship), 153 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and police are interrogating about his possible connection with any organisation.
