: The "hundial" (offering box) of a famous Amman temple at a village in the district was allegedly broken open by robbers today and offerings, including gold ornaments worth several lakhs of Rupees were stolen, police said today.

After failing to break the lock, the burglars used steel cutters to cut open the hundial of the Kanchirankaliamman temple near Theneervayal village.

Forensic experts from Sivaganga collected fingerprints from the spot.

The temple is famous among villagers as they believe that the Goddess is very powerful and solves their problems. In return they offer jewels and currency.

Local Panchayat President Periyannan said the hundial had not been opened for long and it might contain contributions to the tune of several lakhs of Rupees.

He said the hundial had been broken open after a 18 year gap.
