Three poachers held, rhino horn recovered

Three suspected poachers were arrested and a rhino horn seized from their possession at Thelamara area in Assam's Sonitpur district today, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a special police team under Tezpur Police HQ sub-inspector Pradip Gogoi, conducted an operation at Thelamara area and nabbed the three accused, identified as Abdul Haque, Kalu Seikh and Safiqul Islam.

Gogoi said the rhino horn, weighing around 1 kg, was seized from their possession.

"The rhino horn was to be sold at Rs 22 lakh to a peddler here and they confessed that the horn was given by Ramjan Ali of Udalguri Kochari Chak area. They have also confessed of selling a few more rhino horns," Gogoi said.
 

The trio were reportedly linked with some local poachers and carrying out illegal acts like rhino poaching in Orang National Park and Kaziranga National Park, he added.
