Criticising the Modi government for failing to curb price rise, the CPI(M)-led Left Front in West Bengal today said the ruling Trinamool Congress is silent on the matter as it wants to keep the BJP in good humour.

The Left Front today organised a protest march from Esplanade area to Sealdah station to protest rise in prices of essential commodities. The Congress, with which the Left contested the last assembly election, was not invited to the programme.

"Since BJP came to power, the price of essentials has been going up with every passing day. The BJP government has completely failed to check the price rise. The TMC is also maintaining a complete silence on this matter as it wants to keep BJP in good humour," CPI(M) state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said.

The Left leadership said prices of essential commodities were spiralling. The prices of dal and essential food items such as vegetables, grains have skyrocketed.

Prices of petroleum products, particularly diesel, were being raised at an alarming frequency. On June 13, prices of diesel and petrol were hiked once again. This was the fourth increase in the prices of petroleum products in the last six weeks, the Left leaders said.

With the rising prices of diesel, the misery of rural people would only escalate. The government was bolstering its revenues by imposing greater burdens on the people, they added.
