Sri Lankan Naval personnel allegedly chased away some fishermen from this island while they were fishing near Katchatheevu today, police said.
The naval personnel also allegedly damaged more than 30 fishing nets of the fishermen, who had put out to sea along with several others yesterday, they said.
Katchatheevu is an islet ceded by India to Sri Lanka in the 1970s.
Meanwhile, the Fisheries department today slapped a fine of Rs.3,000 each on 285 mechanised fishing boat owners for putting out to sea without obtaining necessary permit, Deputy Director of Fisheries Kasinatha Pandian said.
