Train service on the Sealdah South section of Eastern Railway was disrupted since 4.22 pm today as some local people obstructed movement of trains at Baruipur station to protest eviction of encroachers beside railway tracks.

The locals were protesting against the Railway Protection Force (RPF) drive to make railway land along the tracks between Baruipur and Mullickpur stations encroachment-free, an Eastern Railway spokesman said.

The encroachers were evicted to ensure smooth train operations, he said.

As a consequence of the protests train movements between SealdahLakshmikantapur, SealdahDiamond Harbour, SealdahNamkhana and SealdahBaruipur were hit during the day.

The agitation stranded thousands of passengers at different stations in Sealdah South section during the evening peak hours and help was sought from the police to resume train services, a senior official of Eastern Railway said.
