He is the first mayor to belong to the anti-LF party since Durgapur Municipal Corporation was formed in the industrial town in 1997.
"We will start work by planting 1 lakh trees in the city to curb growing pollution. Our next work would be to provide regular drinking water, improve roads and drainage system in the city," he said after taking oath.
Mukhopadhyay was elected from ward 22.
Another Trinamool Congress leader Suprabhat Mondal, elected from ward 43, took oath as Chairman of the house.
In 43-seat Durgapur Municipal Corporation, Trinamool Congress won 29 seats, Left Front won 11 seats and Congress, BJP and Independent candidates bagged one seat each.
