The driver of a truck was killed here in the wee hours today when his vehicle was hit by another truck whose driver had allegedly dozed off at the wheel, police said.

According to police, the accident occurred in south Delhi's Defence Colony area when a truck coming from the Dhaula Kuan side breached the median divider and crossed to the other side after its driver, identified as Shivendra Pandey, fell asleep while driving.

Pandey's truck collided with another truck, being driven by one Sajjan Kumar Mishra, which was moving on the other carriageway near Andrews Ganj.

Pandey was arrested from the spot after the accident was reported to police at 3 A.M. His truck had Haryana registration plates.

Bihar resident Mishra's truck was loaded with newspapers and he was going to the Dhaula Kuan side from Greater Noida side when the accident happened, police said.

Mishra and his helper Chandan were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where the former was declared dead by doctors, police said.

Chandan is said to be in a critical condition and police said they are waiting for him to recover so that they may record his statement as he is an eyewitness to the accident.

During interrogation, Pandey told police that he dozed off while driving and lost control of the truck. A case of rash driving and death due to negligence has been lodged against him at Defence Colony police station.
