Two held for smuggling gold worth Rs 1.4 cr at Delhi airport

Two men were today arrested by the customs for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 1.4 crore at Delhi airport, an official statement said.

The arrests took place in two separate incidents.

In the first case, a passenger was intercepted after his arrival from Dammam.

"His personal and baggage search resulted in recovery of gold weighing 2.5 kg, in the form of 40 pieces of sheet concealed in the ten emergency light battery carried by him, having market value of Rs 75.65 lakh," the statement issued by the customs said.

In the other case, the accused was intercepted after his arrival from Dubai.

 

He was allegedly carrying gold weighing 1.9 kg, valued at Rs 58.09 lakh, by concealing it inside cardboard boxes and school bags being carried by him, it said.

The value of the gold, which has been seized, in these two cases is about Rs 1.4 crore, the statement said, adding that both the passengers have been arrested.
