Two persons, including a woman, who allegedly robbed a family of cash and jewellery on the pretext of finalising a marriage proposal, have been arrested by the Crime Branch, police said today.

The persons arrested so far have been identified as Mohammed Sajid (26) and Jahida (59). Their accomplices, identified as Sarikh and Sajida, are still at large, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

The gang belongs to Meerut and they had come to know about the victim's family through one of their neighbours who is a native of Meerut.

Based on the information that the victim family was looking for a suitable bridegroom, they hatched a plan accordingly and contacted the family, claiming to be residents of Seemapuri in northeast Delhi, said police.

The gang, pretending to be relatives of the bridegroom, visited the complainant's house at north Delhi's Azad Market area once in June and again in September.

On Thursday, the would-be bridegroom arrived there with three others to finalise the marriage proposal. Once they gained a friendly entry, they pulled out guns and robbed the family of cash and jewellery worth several lakhs, said police.

Based on a tip off, the police laid a trap near Anand Vihar ISBT, from where the accused had gone to dispose of the stolen jewellery, and arrested two persons, while two others managed to flee.

The accused has been booked for robbery and other relevant sections of the law. Efforts are on to arrest the absconding gang members, police added.
