Two persons travelling on a tractor were killed after a container truck hit the vehicle and then tumbled over it today in East Champaran district.
The incident happened near Barharwa village along National Highway 28 when the sugarcane-laden tractor was going to a sugar mill in nearby Gopalganj district.
Dumaria Ghat Station House Officer (SHO) Mithilesh Pandey said the deceased have been identified as Vijay Kumar Yadav (28) and Sri Narayan Sharma (38), residents of Banjaria police station area.
"The container truck smashed the tractor from behind, which fell into the roadside ditch. The truck also lost balance and tumbled over the tractor, crushing the two to death," the SHO added.
The driver and helper of the truck fled from the spot after the accident. The police used cranes to remove the vehicles and recover the dead bodies, which have been sent for postmortem.
A case has been registered and the police is now trying to trace the truck driver and his associate.
