Two persons were killed by a tiger and an elephant in separate incidents in Sonitpur district, officials said today.

Rejia Khatun (56) was killed by a tiger at Dolabari square on NH-37 (A) this morning while she was taking a morning walk, Sonitpur West Divisional Forest Officer Diganta Borborah said.

"The footprints of the tiger are large, so it might be a Royal Bengal tiger. We suspected that the tiger was probably hiding in one of the compounds near the highway," Borborah said.

He said arrangements were being made to track the tiger.

Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar Deka said prohibitory order under section 144 CRPC had been promulgated in the area so that nobody could gather at the site.

In another incident, a person was killed by a wild elephant at Sonajuli Tea Estate last night, police said.

The victim has been identified as Nimai Surin.
