Two Independent MLAs, both brothers, of Punjab Legislative Assembly were arrested today after they staged a symbolic protest against sand mafia near here.

Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjit Singh Bains, along with their supporters, were arrested at Rail Bramad village, after they were allegedly found filling trucks with sand from the bed of Sutlej river, police said.

A police party took the Bains brothers in custody and they were taken to Balachaur. A case has been registered against the duo under section 107/151 (breach of peace and tranquillity) of CrPC.

They will be produced in the court of SDM, Balachaur tomorrow, police said.

The two legislators were recently released on bail by a Ludhiana court following their arrest under several sections of the IPC, including illegal mining.

They have set up an 'Insaaf Party' which is agitating against "sand mafia" in Punjab.
