Two taken into custody for attempting to cast proxy vote

Two persons were taken into custody when they attempted to cast proxy votes in a booth in Koundenpalayam for the mayor bypoll today.

The booth agents of BJP candidate grew suspicious on the movement of the duo and questioned them. As there was no proper response, some party workers assaulted and asked them to leave the place, by which some police officials arrived at the scene and took both the persons, said to be from Chennai, police said.

However, BJP workers protested the action of police of taking the duo with them and askede to file case against them.

Meanwhile, Welfare Party of India candidate, Ibrahim today loldged a complaint about large scale proxy votes being cast in 1033-1035 booths Nanjundapuram Itteri in ward 95. Though the incident was brought to the notice of police, they remained a mute spectator, the party said in a release.
 

A few party workers were also manhandled by the ruling party activists, when they questioned their continuance in casting proxy votes, it said.

In another development, a section of polling officials, kept as reserve in case of emergency, resorted to a demonstration, when some of them arrived little late for duty and marked absent.

They claimed that these personnel were not provided with basic facilities or transportation, they had to come on their own, police said.

However, they withdrew their agitation plan, following intervention of poll officer that the issue will be looked into later, they said.
