Irish rock band U2 served up a treat for their die-hard fans during the opening night of Eight at New York's Madison Square Garden by playing a song "October For First Night", which the group had not performed live since 1989.

Bono and his bandmates eliminated the 1981 tune after the New Zealand leg of their Lovetown tour in November, 1989, but decided it was time to perform it again, reported Rolling Stone magazine.

And among the fans who enjoyed the track - and the rest of the group's set - were Salman Rushdie, Jon Bon Jovi, Christy Turlington and chef Mario Batali.

U2 are using their Innocence + Experience tour to revisit a few old tracks - they performed "In God's Country" for the first time in 14 years on stage in Phoenix, Arizona.
