The Urban Development Ministry is mulling construction of a new office complex in the heart of the national capital to meet the shortage of space faced by central government ministries and their departments.

"Brain storming and discussions are on to work out a plan on how new office structures can come up in the Lutyens' Bungalow zone," a senior official of the ministry said.

He said that the actual shortage of office space is estimated to be around 20 to 22 lakh square feet.

"A high-level meeting to discuss the project will be held in the coming days and it will be discussed how and where, the space for the construction of the new project can be worked out," the official said, adding that the finalised project will require approvals including from the Finance Ministry before it takes off.

The new project is aimed at not only to meet the office-space demand of several ministries but also help bring closer several units that function from offices which are distant from their parent bodies.
