An undertrial committed suicide at Kalna correctional home in West Bengal's Burdwan district today.

Sona Mondal's (26) body was found hanging by a 'gamchha' (a kind of thin towel) in the toilet after breakfast time, Kalna sub-divisional officer Sabyasachi Ghosh said.

The youth, a resident of Saspur in Kalna sub-division, had been sent to the correctional home yesterday on a 14-day jail custody after he was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a girl.

He was accused of kidnapping the girl on November 18, 2015 by her father, who lodged a complaint with the police. He was arrested from Mumbai on January 26 and produced before a court here yesterday and sent to jail custody, Ghosh said.

The youth, he said, had normal dinner last night and breakfast today morning. He then went to the toilet and hung himself, the SDO said.

A magesterial-level inquiry was conducted into the incident, he added.
