Five cops were suspended today, a day after around a dozen Aam Aadmi Party activists were booked for burning Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's effigy in the collectorate compound here.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) has suspended five police personnel on the recommendation of District Magistrate, said Salman Taj Patil, SP (City). The suspended cops were posted at the police post in district court complex yesterday, when the incident took place.

Patil said that DM Nidhi Kesarwani asked SSP KS Emmanuel to initiate stern action against police officials who silently witnessed the effigy burning episode of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Taking serious cognisance on the issue, the SSP suspended police post in-charge sub-inspector Narendra Singh, head constable Ram Jeet, constable Jitendra, Sheeshpal and lady constable Hem Lata, he added.

Yesterday, the AAP workers staged a protest here, demanding early arrest of the accused in the Bulandshahr gangrape case.

A political slugfest is on in the state over the gangrape of a minor girl and her mother on the national highway in Bulandshahr district.
