In a bizarre incident, a man in US tried to pay his water bill with an envelope of crack cocaine.

The man walked into the Deltona Water Office, in Florida on Monday and handed a clerk at the counter an envelope filled with the drug to settle his account.

The envelope contained a small amount of white powder that turned out to be cocaine, spokesman Gary Davidson said.

The spokesman said office staff took precautions to make sure it wasn't something toxic and the office was evacuated.

He said when the powder was examined, though, it tested positive for cocaine, 'News-journalonline.Com' reported.

"We are not sure who did this or why, but we are investigating it," Davidson said.

The envelope contained a small plastic bag similar to those used by jewellers, in which the cocaine was kept, Davidson said.

"The clerk said she had never seen the man before," said sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught.

"He didn't say anything to her, he just handed her the envelope and walked out," Haught said.
