The US has extended its support to the efforts made by leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan to deepen their strategic and defence cooperation.

"We have long said that we welcome the prospect that we bring deepening cooperation between Afghanistan, Pakistan," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

"So certainly we think that falls into the category of efforts to deepen cooperation, which we would support," she said.

Referring to Pakistan Army Chief General Raheel Sharif's Kabul visit, Psaki said the trip was to discuss security cooperation.

Raheel Sharif and Director General ISI Rizwan Akhter arrived in Afghanistan yesterday on a day-long visit to discuss various security issues amid the ongoing operation against militants in border areas.

It was the second visit of General Raheel to Kabul since the horrific Peshawar school attack that killed 150 people, mostly students.

The security cooperation between the two countries has increased since new Afghan president Asharaf Ghani took charge last year.
