Uttarakhand will get control of 41 of the 49 irrigation canals which had been under dispute between the state and Uttar Pradesh for the last 13 years.

While Uttarakhand gets authority over the canals in Haridwar and Udhamsingh Nagar districts, UP will control the rest falling in its area, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna announced during a meeting of the irrigation department yesterday.

The state has allocated Rs 880 crore for flood control measures in calamity-hit areas on which work will start soon, official sources said quoting the Chief Minister.

To speed up work on approved flood control projects worth Rs 290 crore, 10 posts of Chief Engineers have been created. These officials will be deployed in Dehradun, Bageshwar, Haldwani, Rudrapur, Haridwar, Uttarkashi, Shrinagar, Rudraprayag, Roorkee and Didihaat, the sources said.
