To counter the snake menace in the 175-year-old District Jail here, the prison authorities are thinking of deploying a couple of mongooses.

"In the last fortnight, two prisoners suffered snake-bites. Both survived as the snakes were not poisonous," Jail Superintendent Shefali Tiwari told PTI today.

"Keeping in mind these incidents and the fear among the jail staff and inmates, we are thinking of getting mongooses in the prison, which are known to be snake's enemy," she said.

Tiwari also said that authorities were taking the help of the forest department to tackle the problem.

The jail was constructed in 1839. The mortuary and the place where death sentence was executed had remained closed for a long time, which had led to snakes and other reptiles seeking refuge there, she said.
