unidentified persons allegedly looted a van after killing its owner-cum-driver in Ganjam district, the police said.

The duo had taken the van on hire three days ago, they said.

The body of the driver-cum-owner R Sunil Reddy (25) of Anangapur village was recovered by the police on Sunday under a culvert near Humma within Rambha police station limits, about 50-km from here.

Before looting the vehicle, the killers might have stoned Reddy to death and dumped his body, the police said.

"Investigation was on to trace the vehicle. The entire episode of the loot and murder will be known only after tracing the vehicle," they said.

"We have come to know that the vehicle had passed through the Bhejiput, near Keshapur and Jankia. It has come to our knowledge after verification of the CCCTV footage installed at the toll-gates," said Sub Divisional Police Officer, Chhatrapur, Patitapaban Choudhary.

"We are investigating from all angles and have formed teams. The teams are trying to trace the looted vehicle,' he said.

In the pretext of government employees and to transport official records, the miscreants hired the vehicle from Sunil on Saturday last, the police said.

The duo wanted to take the vehicle near Humma, where the record would be loaded and transported to Digapahandi.

When Reddy did not return at night and could not be contacted over his mobile phone, his family members informed the police about his missing.
