Union Science and Technology minister Harsh Vardhan today asked scientists to come up affordable and good quality shoes for sportsmen that can help them in next Olympics.
The minister asked scientists of the Central Leather Research Institute, a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), to involve all stake holders ranging from sportsperson, health experts and industry.
"The Prime Minister has said that we need to start early and catch the young if India has to increase the medal tally. But apart from good infrastructure and sports facilities, the sportsmen will also need good quality and affordable shoes," Vardhan said, adding that not all can afford expensive shoes.
He also asked the CLRI to have a dedicated group of scientist to work on this project and gave a time frame to complete the endeavour.
The CLRI has expertise to develop quality shoes and work on such projects in the past.
