A gang of six cattle rustlers and some villagers allegedly exchanged fire when the latter confronted and chased the former in Muradnagar area this morning, police said.

The rustlers, however, managed to flee the area, leaving the cattle.

Based on a complaint filed by villagers, a case has been registered against six unknown persons at Muradnagar police station.

According to police, a group of six armed cattle rustlers barged into around four houses in different localities of Muradnagar and took away cattle.

"When the accused, who arrived in a canter, were fleeing, some villagers spotted them and raised an alarm. Hearing noise, some persons with their licenced pistols chased them, leading to an exchange of fire," a police officer said.

Sensing trouble, the rustlers left the canter and fled.

Villagers alleged that police personnel, posted on route which the accused took, failed to nab them.

"We have got a complaint from some villagers. The accused would be arrested soon," the officer said.
