A Muzaffapur Municipal Corporation councillor was arrested and sent to judicial custody for 14 days today in connection with the sensational Navruna Chakravarty murder case five years ago.

Rakesh Kumar Sinha, who was arrested soon after being interrogated by CBI officials at its regional office in Patna last evening, was brought to Muzaffarpur and produced today before the special CBI judge Anupama Kumari, who sent him to judicial remand for 14 days.

12 year-old Navruna was kidnapped by unidentified persons on the intervening night of September 17-18, 2012 from her residence at Jawahar Lal Nehru Road under Town police station area in Muzaffarpur.

Her skeleton was recovered from a drain more than two months later. A DNA test was conducted to confirm it.

Her parents have alleged that she was eliminated by land sharks who wanted to usurp their properties at Muzaffarpur.

The state government had handed over probe to the crime branch, but the CBI took over the case in February 2014 on Supreme Court order.
