Leaders of the Congress' West Bengal unit today joined party workers across the country in observing a day-long fast against caste violence, communalism and non-functioning of Parliament, for which the party blamed the ruling BJP at the Centre.

State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury led the programme along with other leaders at the state party headquarters and accused the BJP of destroying the secular fabric of the country.

"The secular fabric of our country is being destroyed by the BJP government at the Centre. In the state, the TMC and the BJP have a tacit understanding and are trying to polarise the people of the state on communal lines," Chowdhury said.

Party sources said its leaders, office-bearers and workers also observed fast at all the districts and blocks of the state.

Congress workers also tied rakhi on each other's wrist and vowed to protect the secularism of the country.
